Onyx is a strikingly beautiful stone that comes in pastel colours and swirling patterns. Its beauty comes from its translucency, allowing the surface to seemingly take on another dimension when a backlight is installed and the stone glows from within.
This stone could make a dramatic backsplash in kitchens, though it will be a mistake to use it as countertops for it scratches easily and would look old and used over just a short period of time, and it is also reacts to acids. For it is a calcareous stone formed by dissolved limestone and redeposited as a new kind of stone, it is extremely fragile and brittle and would require a fiberglass mesh material on the back of an onyx slab to hold the stone together.
